When the Real Recovery Begins: Joseph Kostuch Talks Injury Recovery on the Crashes, Claims & Clarity Podcast

After a workplace injury or motor vehicle accident, many people assume that if they can walk away, the worst is behind them. But as Joseph Kostuch, PT, SCS, recently shared on the Crashes, Claims & Clarity podcast, recovery is often far more complex than it first appears.

In a recent episode hosted by Darrell Burrow, Joe discussed what patients should know about the days and weeks following an accident, why early intervention matters, and how physical therapy can play a critical role in preventing long-term complications.

Joe serves as Senior Regional Director for Human Performance and Rehabilitation Centers (HPRC), a member of the Confluent Health Family with clinics throughout Georgia, including the metro Atlanta area. With more than 25 years of experience in outpatient orthopedics and sports medicine, Joe has dedicated his career to helping patients recover from musculoskeletal injuries while mentoring and developing the next generation of physical therapists.

Throughout the conversation, Joe emphasized that symptoms after an accident are not always immediate. In many cases, pain, stiffness, and mobility limitations evolve over time, making early assessment especially important.

The discussion also explored how physical therapists evaluate new injury patients, identify concerning movement patterns, and guide patients through a recovery process focused on restoring function safely and effectively. Joe highlighted the importance of consistency during rehabilitation, explaining that recovery is not just about reducing pain, but rebuilding strength, mobility, and confidence in movement.

Additional topics discussed in the episode include:

  • Why symptoms can change in the days and weeks after an accident
  • What physical therapists look for during an injury evaluation
  • How early therapy can help prevent secondary complications
  • Why home exercises and movement are essential to recovery
  • The risks of stopping treatment too early
  • How progress and outcomes are measured throughout rehabilitation
  • Georgia’s direct access window for physical therapy and how it supports earlier care

Joe also shared insights into the value of patient education and empowering individuals to stay engaged in their recovery process, both inside and outside the clinic.
